I hope you had an awesome Memorial Day weekend! This weekend tends to involve spending quality time with friends and family as we celebrate the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for us to be free. It also usually involves a lot of drinks and ice cream! The number 1 comment I heard from people on Tuesday is how bad they feel after 3 days of gluttony. To be fair, I did the same! On Monday, I was thinking about what I was going to do to get back on track on Tuesday and came up with these 3 things. On Tuesday, I hit these 3 things and I am back to feeling and eating good. I also have been able to kick the sugar habit I picked up over the weekend.
- Drink a ton of water. One of the main reasons we feel like crap after Memorial Day weekend is because we are dehydrated. We spend the weekend at the beach, on the boat, or outside and usually have a few drinks. Also, since the weekend tends to be go, go, go – we don’t even realize we are so dehydrated until we finally slow down on Tuesday. Go find a nice big water bottle and fill it up. Keep that water bottle next to you and take a drink every time you get a second. You will be amazed at how much better you feel after one day of hydrating. When we are dehydrated we feel like crap – it really is that simple.
- Plan your breakfast the night before and eat it first thing in the morning. There is no easier way to blow up your nutrition for the day than eating junk for breakfast or worse – skipping it all together. We tend to ride on momentum especially with nutrition, so if we have a healthy, filling breakfast then we are more likely to make good decisions the rest of the day. If I don’t make a conscious decision about what I am eating in the morning, then I usually end up scrambling to put something together. When I skip breakfast all together I usually have to eat out early in the day because I get so hungry. Get your breakfast ready to go in your mind to set up the rest of your day for success.
- Go food shopping. If you are anything like me, your fridge is completely empty after this weekend. This is actually a great opportunity to get good food into the house! Decide what you want to eat for your breakfast the next day and then think about what you need for your other meals. If you have no clue, make up a meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and then buy enough to make each meal 3 times. Most people tend to under eat over the holidays. This is because we are usually so busy that we only eat 1 or 2 big meals in a day. We usually feel like we ate so much food simply because we ate big meals and tend to eat less quality choices (and finish it off with dessert). Getting back to eating 3 filling meals a day will help get your body back to “normal” – fueled up and recharged.
